“Fall In Love With Briarcliff” Gives $7500 In Prizes

This season, we asked customers to “fall in love” with Briarcliff– to rediscover our unique boutiques and top-tier restaurants, and spend time relaxing in our Tuscan Village. As a bonus, we gave away over $7500 worth of free merchandise for six consecutive weeks.

Of course, this got people excited. But as it turns out, the best comments we heard had nothing to do with our giveaway. People love Briarcliff Village because it’s a destination. Where else can you go shopping and get a hot stone massage afterwards? Or take your girlfriends to see fashion trends, followed by martinis around a fire pit? Or make your own jewelry to take home?

We learned a lot about why our customers keep coming back. And we’d like to thank them, just as we did with our customer appreciation giveaway. Following is a complete list of winners. Congratulations, and thanks for making us your shopping and dining destination.

Kim Holsted – Week 1 Back To School Family Pack, $575
Pat Harvey – Week 2 Pamper Package, $1405
Mary Ryan – Week 3 Date Night Package, $1450
Barbara Hermocillo – Week 4 Mind, Body, Sole Package $520
Mina Kelly – Week 5 Renew Your Home Package $900

Tom Bates, Amanda Gates, Tammy Milbourn, Susan Sanderson, Marilyn Hoke – Week 6 Briarcliff Village Gift Cards, $500 each
Debbie Kilp – Facebook Fan drawing – $200 Briarcliff Gift Card

Take a Weekend Break from Sales Tax

Fly to New Hampshire for the weekend, and you’ll notice something different. The price tag on clothing in the stores is actually the price you’ll pay. That’s right–no sales tax.

Of course, the Granite State makes up that revenue with other taxes and fees; but it’s nice to know exactly what you’re spending when you head to the register. And during the first weekend of August, Missouri shoppers will get a chance to experience the same convenience. The State Tax Free Holiday runs from Aug. 3-5, and extends to all clothing under $100. (New York City has a similar system year-round: no taxes on garments under $110.) The purpose of the Tax Free weekend is primarily to give families a small break when shopping for back-to-school items, such as clothes, bags and school supplies. But everyone who’s wardrobe shopping in Missouri can take advantage of it–and the boutiques at Briarcliff certainly hope you will.

Tax Free weekend is a great way to incentivize consumers to support small businesses. In effect, it’s a sale; but one where the government cuts its prices, not the entrepreneur. Furthermore, the timing of Missouri Tax Free Holiday to coincide with Back to School gives local merchants the chance opportunity to spotlight nationwide trends for fall, and all the great styles they’ve picked up for the new season.

Briarcliff’s three main clothing boutiques–Amelia’s, Design in the City, and Finishings for Her–will all have the latest fall fashions on hand. And don’t forget about shops like Urban Arts + Crafts and Shana Vaughn Designs, which sell handbags. (Or a Vera Bradley backpack from Finishings for Her, like the one pictured below.) Your little ones can qualify for a Tax Free discount at Lauren Alexandra, and you might even find some shoes at Smart Feet.

Tax Free Weekend is a win-win. Come out in support of local businesses, and take advantage of great savings at the same time.

Lower Your Car Insurance

Did you know that people in certain professions qualify for lower auto insurance? It’s part of the Affinity program from Farmers Insurance, which offers discounts for selected workplaces and trade associations. The Bower Agency in Briarcliff offers Affinity programs to employees around Kansas City in the following disciplines:

  • Education (K-12 or college professors)
  • Science and Engineering
  • Accounting
  • Medicine (Doctors, RNs, Veterinarians, Pharmacists, Dentists)
  • Police Officers
  • Fire Fighters
  • Psychologists

Why these particular groups? Studies show that people in these fields are statistically less likely to have an accident, and therefore a better risk to insure. But you don’t have to actually work as a doctor or teacher to reap the benefit of those statistics. You just have to work in the industry. That’s because Affinity discounts are offered to entire companies or employee associations. So, let’s say you’re an office assistant for a dentist who is enrolled in the program. You, too, would be eligible to receive the reduced insurance rate.

Want to find out more about the Affinity program and how it can benefit your entire office? Contact Jenny Bower at (816) 746-8181. A representative from the Bower Agency will come to your office and explain how your staff can start saving today.

Make A Wish, Have a Free Cupcake

Remember in grade school when your mom baked cupcakes for your birthday? So do we. That’s why we love the latest promotion at Sugar Mamma’s Bakery. Owners Earl and Debbie Wetzel, whose stated mission is “a cupcake for every person in Kansas City,” are starting by giving one free cupcake to every customer on their birthday. Just add Sugar Mamma’s as a “friend” on Facebook to be entered into their calendar. (Make sure you have your birthday listed on your profile.) Then, walk in on your b-day and claim your sugary sweet, frosting-topped prize.

Invite your friends for a cupcake party, just like in the old days. Or, take some quiet time to relax and enjoy a cup of Roasterie coffee and free wi-fi. In fact, the next time you’re at Sugar Mamma’s, you can pull out your laptop and “friend” them right there. On your next birthday, you’ll be the kid with the cool cupcakes again. Just don’t light any candles in the store.

Lose Your Winter Blues at the Spa

After the bustle of holiday parties and shopping, winter can feel like a letdown. Short days mean less sunlight, which can lead to a decrease  in energy or mood. The pace of life slows dramatically, as colder weather drives people indoors.

If you’re the type who dreads the winter, we suggest using these months as a quiet time to focus on your emotional and physical well-being. By treating yourself to relaxing, rewarding activities that enhance your total health, you’ll feel positive and rejuvenated before you even get to spring.

The Spa at Briarcliff offers a holistic philosophy as a Murad Inclusive Health Center. More than just pampering, we address three levels of treatment: topical (the treatment itself), internal (whole body health) and emotional (making you feel good about yourself). This season, consider trying something special by immersing yourself in one of our water treatments. Say goodbye to stress and hello to a winter of content!

  • The Float Experience. Everyday expectations, stress, and the aging effect of gravity take their toll on all of us. “Floating” helps to promote the release of endorphins, which rejuvenates your body and mine. With 60 minutes of floating, your body and mind can experience the equivalent of four hours’ normal rest. The Float Experience is an enclosed room within a room, to ensure a calming, private setting where the body can remain in a state of tranquility. The body simply “floats” in 12 inches of buoyant, mineral-rich, termperature-maintained (94°F) water. The Float Experience is designed to detoxify the body, sedate the nervous system, relax muscles, reduce fatigue, promote healing, enhance creativity and much more.
  • The Amazon RiverWalk™ Experience. Schedule your next service in the Amazon RiverWalk™ room, and your senses will immediately tell the difference. Experience sheer bliss as your absorb the candlelit fireplace. Relax in the currents of the Riverbath, before moving to the massage table for a Relaxation Massage, perhaps an invigorating body treatment or a maybe a renewing facial. Finish in the private, feature shower with multiple body sprays.
  • The European Bath Ritual™.  Our European Bath Ritual™ consists of three-jetted pools with cascading waterfalls. Each pool is a different temperature to ease muscle tension, increase circulation and promote relaxation. We highly recommend using the pools and waterfalls prior to any massage, to extend effective massage time by warming up your muscles. Swimsuit required.

Fashion Tip: Where to Find UGGs this Winter

Fashion blogs call them “the trend that won’t go away.” Clearly, the makers of UGG boots must be doing something right. Inspired by sheepskin styles from Australia and New Zealand, UGGs became a worldwide fashion obsession in the early 2000s. Today, the designer boots remain as sought-after as ever, selling out in places like Bloomingdale’s New York. But if you’re on a quest for the season’s latest UGG styles, here’s one place you may not have looked: Smart Feet in Briarcliff Village.

When it comes to UGGs, the rule for Kansas City shoppers is simple: Go North. Because of the massive chain stores in Johnson County, young people in particular flock to that area for trendy goods. But for the savvy shopper, local boutiques like Smart Feet in Briarcliff offer greater selection, better service and the exact same price points. In fact, Smart Feet is just one of two UGG distributors in Northland. So if you do live North of the River, it’s a pretty obvious choice.

In addition to all the usual models, Smart Feet carries the ridiculously hard-to-find Sparkle UGGs and Over the Knee UGGs (the current footwear fetish of the fashion world). Incidentally, a look at the UGGs website will reveal most of these styles sold out.

People tend to love UGGs or hate them. If you fall into the latter category, you might not want to look at people’s feet this winter. But if you’re of the former mindset, we’ll probably see you at Briarcliff Village very soon. Happy shopping.

Wake Up to New Tastes at the Cafe

Rise and shine. The Cafe at Briarcliff is greasing its frying pans for a whole new crowd of early birds. Breakfast, long a favorite weekend tradition at the Cafe, is now served hot off the grill seven days a week. Start your day with a power combo of Country Fried Steak and Eggs, or a trim and healthy bowl of low-fat yogurt, layered with fruits and granola. From Belgian Waffles to Bacon Quesadillas, there’s something for all tastes between 8 and 11 a.m. (Sunday brunch served til 1 p.m.)

And that’s not the only hot news from the Cafe. A smoking new BBQ section recently appeared on the menu. In homage to our hometown culinary roots, the Cafe now proudly serves locally-made, award-winning Three Little Pigs BBQ sauce. (For those in the know: it’s won the American Royal cook-off three times.) All meats are slow-cooked on a special smoker made in Kansas, for a truly authentic and delicious meal.
