Nell Hill’s Tips on Going “Green”

I am so greedy for green by the time spring rolls around that I can’t just enjoy nature outside my window—I have to fill my home with plants too.  I can’t get over what a difference it makes when you add a splash of green to a few key spots. It lifts my spirits and freshens my décor. Here are five quick tips for working plants into your home too.

1. Celebrate the Art of the Topiary

I am crazy about live topiaries because they are verdant three-dimensional art. So this spring, I’ve decided to showcase them in my home and feature them at my Spring Open House on May 11. I hope you’ll join me for this fun, fun day when I open my historic home in Atchison, Kansas, for free tours. The perfect way to celebrate Mother’s Day, the Spring Open House will be relaxed and informal, and each room in my home will be full of inspiring spring decorating ideas. One of my favorites will be topiaries! In fact, I’m going to have a large number of live topiaries for sale during the open house. I can’t wait for you to see them – you are going to love them as much as I do!

2. Add Romance with Ferns

You have to know right up front that I am NOT a green thumb. Every house plant I’ve tried to grow has met the same disastrous end. My friend Melinda says that for me, house plants are like fresh flowers because they have about the same lifespan in my home (you gotta love your friends, don’t you?!?). Still, I can’t resist!

One of my all-time favorites is the maiden hair fern, and I pick up several every year. They are so romantic, with their wispy fronds, and they are particularly resilient – if they wilt, just trim them, give them some water and they will make a comeback.

Once I pick some pretty plants, I put them (plastic pots and all) into cachepots and work them into displays throughout my home. You may find one on a bedside table in my bedroom, on a vanity in the bathroom, on the mantel or a side table. When the weather warms, I put a cluster on a plant stand on my screened porch. I like how the inside plants look against the green backdrop of my garden.

If you don’t want the fuss and risk of using a live plant, try a fake. Many of today’s faux plants look so real you’ll have to pinch them to see if they are alive or not. Faux house plants are also a great option for rooms you don’t use often or for second residences, like a lake house.

3. Go for the Drama with a Stately Palm

Give a room in your home a bit of exotic beauty by putting a large palm in a killer cachepot and displaying it in a prominent spot. This year, I picked up two palm trees, one for my entry and one for my living room. I slipped one palm into a large blue and white Asian cachepot and the other into a plain white cachepot.

The palm in my entry sits atop a five-foot tall pedestal and is stationed next to my staircase. It fills up this vacant space perfectly and gives me the wow factor I’m looking for. The palm in my living room is standing on the round table that divides the room into separate seating areas. The height of the plant helps separate the two spaces a bit more and gives me lots of vertical height, which I need in this loft space.

Another favorite look of mine is to place a large faux fern in an iron garden urn in the corner of my dining room, as you see in the photo above. The little pop of green looks great in the room, and the fern is airy enough that it doesn’t take up much room or fight for attention.

4. Freshen Your Front Door

In the spring, I often hang faux green wreaths on my door. I’ve gotten wreaths made from fern fronds, flowers and twigs. This year, my pick is a wreath made from preserved boxwood branches. It’s simple and clean and perfect. You can hang it solo, and you have a powerful punch of natural color. Or, you can dress it up, like we’ve done at the Nell Hill’s stores, tying it with a plaid ribbon and inserting a bird’s nest pick. Love it!

5. Get Wild with Green Branches

One of our favorite looks at Nell Hill’s is to make natural looking arrangements out of real sticks and faux spring branches. To create this wild and wonderful look, select a big ginger jar, tall glass cylinder vase or tall iron garden urn. Insert some bare fallen branches to create the base of the bouquet. Then, work in an assortment of faux picks that resemble spring branches covered in buds. The goal is to arrange the pieces so the bouquet looks spontaneous and natural, like you were out trimming your bushes and just stuck the cuttings in a vase for a second. The jumble of branches captures the essence of spring. In the snapshot above, taken of an arrangement we created at Garrity’s Encore in Atchison, we wove in white lights to elevate the drama.

Farmers’ Market Begins

Spring is officially back! We’re kicking off the 2012 season of the GreenAcres Farmers’ Market. Join us in the Briarcliff Parking lot from 3-7 p.m., where we’ll be firing up the grill for buffalo burgers, all-natural Greek lamb burgers and succulent Portobello mushroom burgers. It’s the start of a weekly celebration that will continue every Thursday into October. Bring your whole family for some shopping and the best local vendors in the area.

Every week, Missouri and Kansas farmers will be out in full force presenting their 100 percent organic produce, as well as jams, jellies and homemade baked goods.  You’re sure to hear us before you actually see us, since we’ll have live music on the sidewalk.  Park where you can and make your rounds to sample some of the best home-grown products anywhere.  There’s a woman who cans her own mustards; a man who makes homemade pastas; a berry vendor who has fresh blueberries, blackberries and strawberries.  Like a little spice in your life?  Check out the authentic Mexican tamales and salsas–yummm.  And Jerry’s Furniture will once again have handcrafted furniture for sale.

When you’re tired of all the seeing, visiting and buying outside, step inside GreenAcres Market for some of our own products: cheese and crackers, organic chips and dips…and to wash it all down, tastings from our wine collection.  There will be other product demonstrations, and as always, the GreenAcres knowledgeable staff will be on deck to answer any and all questions about wholesome, healthy living.  Welcome to spring!

Wake Up to New Tastes at the Cafe

Rise and shine. The Cafe at Briarcliff is greasing its frying pans for a whole new crowd of early birds. Breakfast, long a favorite weekend tradition at the Cafe, is now served hot off the grill seven days a week. Start your day with a power combo of Country Fried Steak and Eggs, or a trim and healthy bowl of low-fat yogurt, layered with fruits and granola. From Belgian Waffles to Bacon Quesadillas, there’s something for all tastes between 8 and 11 a.m. (Sunday brunch served til 1 p.m.)

And that’s not the only hot news from the Cafe. A smoking new BBQ section recently appeared on the menu. In homage to our hometown culinary roots, the Cafe now proudly serves locally-made, award-winning Three Little Pigs BBQ sauce. (For those in the know: it’s won the American Royal cook-off three times.) All meats are slow-cooked on a special smoker made in Kansas, for a truly authentic and delicious meal.

Fashion Blossoms at Amelia’s

Let’s face it: you don’t really need an excuse to shop. But warmer weather definitely makes a compelling case for a wardrobe upgrade. If you’re on a mission to shed your winter layers in favor of the new seasonal trends, here are some of the latest looks from Amelia’s, one of the trendiest boutiques we know. And if you like these highlights, be sure to check out the store and peruse their full spring collection.

Bright colors and chunky jewelry are the talk of the season. (We especially love the purple-and-black dress with contrasting yellow belt. It doesn’t get any bolder than that!) Textures are mixed together and layered on each other for a unique effect: metal accessories, straw bags and hats, denim with lightweight cotton, etc. Another great example of this is the popularity of knits, in everything from dresses to shrugs:

This one layers with a springy floral top in the most flattering way, complemented by the right belt and bold necklace. You’ll find a lot of these combinations at Amelia’s right now, and pretty much anywhere that’s on the cutting edge of trends.

And if you’re wondering about accessories …

Bold, vintage pieces with lots of sparkle, platform wedges, and daring colors and patterns will finish off your spring look. (The turquoise bag with the bird in the center? The gorgeous shade of red summer wedges on the left? We want!)

The staff at Amelia’s do a fantastic job of putting together creative, flattering outfits. So don’t hesitate to go in and start browsing things you like. After all, it is spring … time for a trendy new you!

Lower Your Car Insurance

Did you know that people in certain professions qualify for lower auto insurance? It’s part of the Affinity program from Farmers Insurance, which offers discounts for selected workplaces and trade associations. The Bower Agency in Briarcliff offers Affinity programs to employees around Kansas City in the following disciplines:

  • Education (K-12 or college professors)
  • Science and Engineering
  • Accounting
  • Medicine (Doctors, RNs, Veterinarians, Pharmacists, Dentists)
  • Police Officers
  • Fire Fighters
  • Psychologists

Why these particular groups? Studies show that people in these fields are statistically less likely to have an accident, and therefore a better risk to insure. But you don’t have to actually work as a doctor or teacher to reap the benefit of those statistics. You just have to work in the industry. That’s because Affinity discounts are offered to entire companies or employee associations. So, let’s say you’re an office assistant for a dentist who is enrolled in the program. You, too, would be eligible to receive the reduced insurance rate.

Want to find out more about the Affinity program and how it can benefit your entire office? Contact Jenny Bower at (816) 746-8181. A representative from the Bower Agency will come to your office and explain how your staff can start saving today.

Can I Really Reverse Aging?

Whether you’re currently using anti aging skin care products or just beginning to explore the best anti wrinkle products for younger-looking skin, you’ve probably been told about antioxidants. Many people extol the virtues of an antioxidant-rich diet, and topical creams packed with antioxidants are said to give you an extra boost of anti aging ingredients. So, what does all this mean? Do antioxidants really work? The Spa at Briarcliff is here to explain, thanks to the scientific research of the Murad Inclusive Health Centers, our partner organization.

Free Radicals and Aging Skin
The first thing you’ll need to know before you can understand the importance of antioxidants in anti aging skin care is the definition of a free radical. No doubt you’ve heard the term “free radical” used frequently when discussing aging skin, particularly in relation to Environmental Aging or sun damage. In scientific terms, a free radical is an oxygen molecule that has only one electron instead of two.

How Do Free Radicals Form?
Free radicals form from UV damage to the skin or from exposure to toxins or other pollutants. The existence of a certain level of free radicals in your system is a natural part of aging. However, environmental elements and exposure to the sun and pollution can increase the number of free radicals in your body and accelerate the signs of aging.

How Do Free Radicals Cause Older-Looking Skin?
When a free radical forms, it immediately begins to attack other molecules in your system looking to “replace” its missing electron. Collagen molecules are often the first targets. Obviously, anything that contributes to an accelerated rate of collagen breakdown also leads to the formation of lines, wrinkles and loose skin.

Antioxidants Fight Free Radicals
This is where antioxidants come into the picture, both as part of an anti aging diet and as ingredients in your anti aging products. Antioxidants are nutrients that work to slow down the effect of free radicals and neutralize them in your body. A good metaphor is an apple. If you cut an apple, it begins to turn brown. However, if you dip the apple in orange or lemon juice, which contain Vitamin C (high in antioxidant properties), the apple stays white. Antioxidants can have the same impact on keeping your skin looking fresh and healthy by combating the elements that lead to collagen breakdown and even sun spots and age spots.

Where Do You Get Antioxidants?
Antioxidants are an important part of an anti aging regimen, both as an element of Inclusive Health® and an ingredient in your skin care products. In your skin care regimen, look for products that actively contain antioxidant ingredients (such as the Murad Vitalic® line or the Murad Environmental Shield® line). In your diet, incorporate fruits, vegetables and even green tea. The more you expose your body to antioxidants both internally and topically, the more your skin will stay healthy and youthful.
