The Art and Style of Piropos
stored in: Dine, Piropos

Exotic fine dining. A view of the Downtown skyline through floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Downstairs, a piano bar playing into the night. What could be more romantic?

Piropos restaurant specializes in the cuisine of Buenos Aires–a coastal, cosmopolitan metro area of about 10 million people. With residents from many of Europe’s great cities, Buenos Aires boasts a rich cultural diversity. Art, architecture and food have a distinct flavor, found nowhere else in the world. And Piropos seeks to recreate it.

So what, in Argentina, are “Piropos?” According to Owner Cristina Worden: “A piropo is a compliment to a woman. Like, you would say, If beauty were a sin you would never be forgiven.”

Wait. Is this what’s known in America as a pick-up line?

I forgot your number … can I have yours?

Absolutely not, says Cristina. Apparently, Argentine men have much more finesse than that. In fact, Piropos Restaurant provides examples on its Facebook page each week, to illustrate the art of giving a “piropo.” Here are some notable examples–all of them quite lovely:

  • Love is like finding the last piece of a puzzle.
  • I love you in reality and in dreams.
  • How lucky I am to have someone who makes saying goodbye so hard.
Now, consider that the tango tradition (also from Argentina) often involves men speaking these to their partners in-between dances. Ladies, wouldn’t you love your husbands or boyfriends to do that?
Tell him he can start by taking you to Piropos for dinner. Maybe he can rehearse a few lines to say between the brie en crout and the baked tilapia. Or if not, you can sit and gaze together at one of the most romantic views in the city.
