Sugar Mamma’s Gourmet Bakery Takes The Cake

Sugar Mamma’s doesn’t mess around when it comes to pastries. The locally-owned shop in Briarcliff is a sanctuary for anyone with a sweet tooth. Owners Debbie and Earl Wetzel and their staff attempt to keep the shelves stocked with cupcakes, cookies, cookie bars, truffles, and more. Trouble is, regular and new customers stream in daily to satisfy their craving for sweet treats that fly out the door.

The Wetzels bought the business in March 2011 from previous owners that opened the shop a year earlier.

“We wanted to open a cupcake store in the Northland,” says Debbie. “We did our research, looked at shops in Kansas City and beyond. We found this one for sale and fell in love with the look and charm the instant we walked in the door. Now we specialize in cupcakes and so much more.” says Debbie.

When the couple bought the business, they retained the services of a baker on staff. To the benefit of Sugar Mamma’s ongoing operation, the business already had a regular clientele. The Wetzels did make some immediate changes. They hired a cake designer and pastry chef to keep up with growing demand and to specialize their services and product line.

In-stock items change on a weekly basis. Some current pastries include cake balls, double chocolate Nutella cookies, cinnamon rolls, turnovers, lemon and lime bars, macaroons, and cupcakes in tempting flavors such as dreamsicle, raspberry lemonade, red velvet, and salted caramel. The best bet is to check the website (SugarMammasBakery.com) for their daily selection of fresh pastries and lunch specials.

“We offer new flavors daily,” says Debbie. “Our bakers have the freedom to try different flavors, but we do try to offer a consistent product lineup.”

The shop designs and bakes custom cakes for weddings, grooms, baby showers, wedding showers, or any special occasion. Debbie advises contacting the shop for design consultation and booking services well in advance.

“We do our best to accommodate any order placed regardless of notice, however considering the size of our staff and freshness of our product we have a limit to how many orders we can take on a given day,” says Debbie.

Groom’s cakes are becoming a popular complement to wedding cakes. A custom cake made for the groom can reflect his personality or interests. Or, the cake can include an offbeat, must-have ingredient that isn’t desirable for the main event served to all wedding guests.

“Custom 3D cakes are popular to celebrate special events,” says Debbie. “Just recently we did a cake for the Zac Brown Band to celebrate their Grammy win.”

Custom cake pricing varies based on the size, design, and materials. Flavor options run the gamut from the traditional (white butter, vanilla) to fruit/citrus (orange, strawberry, banana, coconut-rum, lavender) to exotic and unusual (Champagne, margarita, chocolate merlot).

A new addition to the shop is the crepe menu. Both sweet and savory crepes are available for both breakfast and lunch, with house specialties available. The Northlander is chock full of turkey, bacon, sprouts, cream cheese and roasted red pepper folded into a spinach crepe.

Sugar Mamma’s makes more than cakes, cupcakes, and pastries. The shop serves daily $5 lunch specials such as chicken salad on croissant with soup; smoothies, and Roasterie coffee. Starting 7a.m., they serve breakfast items such as oatmeal, yogurt parfait, ham and cheese croissants, and cinnamon rolls.

The shop also offers its space for children’s birthday parties (5- 12 year-olds), baby and wedding showers, or other occasions. For  $15 per person, guests can have a cupcake decorating party with appetizers. Have a birthday coming up? Sugar Mamma’s offers a free cupcake on your birthday for its Facebook friends.

Sugar Mamma’s also caters and will tailor a menu to the customer’s request. They don’t have a set catering menu at this time. “We’re growing so fast that we can only keep up with so much,” says Debbie. “We’re a small, privately owned bakery.”

Custom orders for all goods require at least 48 hours advance notice. Despite the demands on running a business, Debbie and her husband Earl gain satisfaction when their customers are pleased. “I love dealing with little kids when they walk in the door and their face lights up when they see the dessert case,” Debbie says. “And when customers are floored after seeing their custom order. It’s all about the smile.”

Sugar Mamma’s is now also showing their love for their customers with the new Spot On promotion. With each visit, a new “spot” is added and after a certain number, a free tasty treat can be yours.

This is just one more way that Sugar Mamma’s is becoming more than a place for occasional treats. It’s a neighborhood stop in for those with a sweet tooth in the Northland.

Go Red for Women with Briarcliff Village

Briarcliff Village is Going Red for Women in February. Come enjoy our red village as we support the American Heart Association all month long. With heart disease claiming the lives of nearly 500,000 women each year, Go Red For Women has a mission of raising awareness and empowering women to take charge of their heart health.

February has been designated as Heart Month, and Briarcliff Village wants to help by providing our customers with knowledge and education. You can take advantage of tools and strategies within our retail center, to reduce your personal risk of heart disease and lead a heart-healthy life.

Exercise: The possibilities for “exercise” are endless. Even just taking a lap around the retail center increases your heart rate and reduces stress at the same time. You can also sign up for Zumba at Scott Fitness for a fun, heart-pumping workout.

Stress: While simply strolling around Briarcliff Village will pump up your feel-good endorphins, stopping by The Spa at Briarcliff or Rajeunir Medical Spa for a quick treatment can help with de-stressing. Also, hop into a Yoga class at Scott Fitness to improve the mind-body connection.

Diet: Choosing the right menu items at our restaurants is a breeze. Start your meal with a soup or salad to avoid overeating or pleasure eating. Ordering sauces on the side and using them sparingly is also a good practice. While all options in our restaurants are made with the best ingredients, choosing a meal that consists of lean proteins and veggies is ideal for heart health. Stop by Piropos, Trezo Mare, and The Café at Briarcliff to see
all the healthy choices.

If you need a quick bite, fast food is not the only option. Philly Time offers an amazing selection of subs, wraps, and salads made to order. Pair it with a pasta salad and water for a filling lunch on the go. GreenAcres Market is another village favorite for a speedy meal. Along with their full delicatessen, the soup and salad bar is an endless health-fest. Order a full entree for a take home dinner or a sandwich with fresh fruit. GreenAcres Market is also the place for all your fresh, natural, and organic grocery needs. You can even sign up for one of their many classes devoted to overall good health practices.

Whether you’re here everyday in one of our office buildings, or shopping in one of our boutiques, Briarcliff Village is committed to improving the lives of our customers, inside and out. Try out one of these tips in the month of February and begin your journey to better heart health awareness.

Meet Our Merchant of the Month: Nell Hill’s

For home decorating fans across the nation, the name Briarcliff Village is synonymous with Nell Hill’s, its most famous locally-owned retailer. Founded in nearby Atchison, Kan., over 30 years ago, Nell Hill’s has grown from a single, small-town boutique to an empire of interior design products. The driving force behind the brand is Mary Carol Garrity, who still resides in Atchison despite her worldwide renown. You can also regularly find Mary Carol at Nell Hill’s second location in Briarcliff, chatting with her Kansas City customers and making them feel welcome.

“I am always available to answer customers’ questions and offer real-life decorating solutions,” Mary Carol says. “I always rise to the challenge of helping my customers uncover their own style.”

That reputation has certainly spread throughout the home decorating community. The Briarcliff store is a hot spot for Kansas City tourists, and the original Atchison location draws about 95 percent of its clientele from over 100 miles away. Merchandise is different at each store and always changing with the trends and seasons. But all of it expresses Mary Carol’s unparalleled style: classic yet creative, with an aesthetic that’s both cozy and exciting. It’s not surprising that Forbes magazine called her “one of the hottest little retailers” in America.

If you want to get a sneak peek at what’s in inside Nell Hill’s, you can check out the many helpful tips and articles on Mary Carol’s blog. Or, you can read one of her many books, including Nell Hill’s Style at Home, Nell Hill’s Christmas at Home, and Nell Hill’s Decorating Secrets: Easy and Inspiring Ways to Bring Style Into Your Home.

Mary Carol says she named Nell Hill’s after her grandmother, an early Kansas pioneer. There’s something down-home in Mary Carol’s design elegance, a relic of that pioneer spirit. Down to her nationally syndicated radio program and her licensed paint collection, she’s truly forged her own path. And she loves watching others do the same.

“I never forget a face, and I thrive on meeting people,” she says of the countless hours she’s spent consulting with people.

Visit Nell Hill’s for the holiday season, and you won’t soon forget Mary Carol, either. Or the magical world she’s created. For more information, contact Nell Hill’s Briarcliff at (816) 746-4320.

Meet Our Merchant of the Month: Eclektica Salon

Carolina Coleman has studied hair around the world: in Spain, Italy, Cuba and her native Mexico. In 2006, she opened Eclektica, the Salon at Briarcliff, giving Kansas City clients a sophisticated destination for cut, color and style.

“Every client to me is a star,” says Carolina. “I always imagined a salon where stylists could contribute their talents and uniqueness, and together we could raise the bar.” Raising the bar together—as a team—is exactly what Eclektica does. The concept is indeed eclectic, embracing international trends and often requiring stylists to “step out of the box.” But at the heart of Eclektica’s artistry is the concept of community: a camaraderie among staff, which informs how clients are cared for.

“In most salons, it’s every person for him or herself,” notes Carolina. “What makes Eclektica unique is our team spirit. We push each other to be our best. We are committed to giving clients extraordinary experiences.” Carolina praises her stylists as among the best in the business—accountable, professional, creative and eager to learn. She refers to them as “artists” who know how to make each client “shine.”

“To me, a good haircut starts with getting to know the client. Plus, taking into consideration the client’s features so you can frame the face properly,” Carolina explains. “A haircut needs to be precise and have some texture according to the hair type, and should be easy to recreate at home. It needs to be your signature.”

Carolina says she loves working in Briarcliff Village, because of the local atmosphere. There’s a sense of local pride, and support for small businesses. “It’s a great little microcosm of entrepreneurial America,” she says. Eclektica is always participating in community life, from creating a window display for the Go Red for Women fundraiser to offering pink highlights and extensions during Breast Cancer Awareness month. Famous stylists from around the country come in regularly to teach seminars, and through education the stylists grow into a stronger team.

Recently, Carolina signed onto a specialized training program through L’Oreal, a line of salon products she endorses based on her years of experience. Not only will she and her stylists learn more, but the program’s structure will give senior stylists the opportunity to step into more management-oriented roles. It will also allow Carolina to focus on some of her favorite aspects of being a woman-owned business: helping other women grow in their careers.  She will continue to see clients two days a week.

When she isn’t working with clients and running a successful business, Carolina enjoys life at Weatherby Lake with her husband, son and dog. Ever the artist, she loves dancing, gardening, opera, classical music and foreign films. But, she says, “My passion has always been hairdressing.”

Eclektica, the Salon at Briarcliff, offers haircuts and coloring for women and men—all of which include a stylist consultation. For more information or to book an appointment, call (816) 587-4159.
